DIY How to Care for your Lawn in the fall. 4-steps for fall lawn care

Thanks for tuning in guys this is the Pest and Lawn Ginja. Today we go over my lawn care tips for fall and winter. I developed an easy to follow 4 step to care for your lawn in the fall.

Step 1- Watering. It all starts with proper watering in the fall time. Evaporation is minimized due to colder temperatures which means you only need to water your lawn eveyr 7 to 10 days at most. It's important to monitor your water usage with an AMS soil probe. Ideally we want water to penetrate 6" to 8" deeps. Overwatering can cause fungus issues and under watering will cause drought stress dormancy.

Step 2- Lowering the HOC
- End of the season mowing is very important as it minimizes potential for fungus. Fungus like brown patch are commonly caught in the debris layer and over winter. Lowering the height of cut in the fall will minimize the potential for these harmful fungus's.

Step 3- Yard Cleanup
- Using a thatch rake or dethatcher to remove excess lawn debris is an important part to fungal prevention. Lawn debris can accumulate from lawn mowing clippings, leaves, or mulch that didn't decay over the summer. Removing the lawn debris will help oxygen transfer and fertilizer uptake.
- An optional step after removing the lawn debris is use of a lawn aeration device or aerator. Fall aeration is best for lawns in clay type soils. It helps de-compact the lawn and removes thatch.

Step 4- Fall Fertilizer
- The best fall fertilizer is on that is high in potassium and includes a quick release ammonium nitrate or urea nitrogen. Quick release fertilizers work best in fall and the potassium helps keep the grass hardy in the cold weather.
