There's no better time to start fixing your lawn than now! Don't make these costly fall lawn care mistakes

Fall time is one of the best times to start or repair your lawn. The first mistake I see people making is they water too much or too little. As the outside temperatures start cooling down having too much water can cause lawn fungus. Having too little water can cause the grass to dry up and stress out. Ideally we never want the soil to dry up. The best thing we can do is adjust the sprinkler times to accomodate for the changes in the weather.

Lawn mistake number two is not removing the leaves from the lawn. The best thing you can do is to mulch the leaves back into the lawn. Leaves are packed full of nutrients such as zinc, manganese and nitrogen. These natural sources are just what the soil wants and needs.

The third mistake I see people making is lack of mowing. People end up tired at the end of the season. they've been mowing the grass weekly and now want to stop. It's common for people to leave the grass long at the end of the season. It is best to mow the grass more frequently and drop the height of cut. By the time the grass goes dormant I keep my lawn at 1" to 2" in height. This helps avoid costly lawn fungus's like snow mold.

The last lawn mistake we talk about is its common to stop fertilizing and feeding the lawn. Fall time is a fantastic time to fertilizer. I keep my lawn green throughout the winter by doing regular fall applications every 4 weeks. I focus on ammoniacal and ammonium based nitrogen, as well as a good feeding of potassium. My favorite fall fertilizer is a 7-4-14.
