Prevent weeds in the lawn this fall so they don't appear next spring. This is a pre-emergent strategy for those of you who are not planning to seed your lawn this fall. Anyone with cool season turf can undertake this strategy but I highly recommend anyone with warm season turf (Bermuda, Zoysia, St Augustine, Centipede and Bahaaaiiiiiiia) all strongly consider a pre-emergent strategy for fall time.

Here is the blog post that gives you more details:

Basic Strategy Cool Season Lawns: (where the ground freezes)
4lbs/1000 when soil temps fall to 70F (September usually)
That should be all you need to prevent Henbit, poa annua, chickweed, etc.
Whatever you have leftover just use it next season for your spring crabgrass pre-emergent. The added potash in this product is a bonus too going into the fall.

Basic Strategy Warm Season Lawns: (where the ground doesn't freeze)
((this strategy would also work for turf type tall fescue lawns in the transition zone))

4lbs/1000 when soil temps fall to 70F (October sometime)
4lbs/1000 when soil temps fall to 55F (your soil temp may hover at this range most of the winter)

That will cover you all the way until the following March or so which is about when you are going to start thinking about spring pre-emergents for crabgrass. The circle of life has continued.
