DIY How To fix common lawn problems with store bought solutions. 5 common lawn problems & solutions
Thanks for tuning in. Today we go to our local IFA lawn and garden store and explore the solutions to the top 5 diy how to repair lawn problems
5. How to make the lawn green again and combat stress dormancy. My recommendation is to use a product called Revive. It's a 5-1-1 with 2% iron. I run it at 5lbs per 1000ft2. Revive is classified as a wetting agent and helps lawns and soil that become aquaphobic.
If revive isn't available I suggest getting a 20.0.0 granular and run it at 4lbs per 1000ft2 and lay down some humates and calcium to aid in the recovery
4. How do I fix or prevent turf insects like grubs, sod web worms and cranberry girdlers that are in my grass or lawn
My suggestion is to find a preventive and curative insecticide. You can find products like bifen I/t 7.9 as a curative or Imidacloprid 2f by quali-pro as a preventive that lasts up to 9 weeks in the plant. There are granular options like duocide insect control that are fantastic curative products or the bioAdvanced Complete Insect Killer 2-way formula that acts as both a preventive and curative insecticide.
3. What should I buy to control weeds without killing the grass
This all depends on the type of weed you're targeting. I suggest identifying the weed first.
For general broadleaf control a 2,4-d base with dicamba and mecoprop will do fantastic. Commonly known as trimec.
For your hard to do weeds like thistle and clover a 4-way with tryclopyr works fantastic
For difficult weeds like morning glory having a product with a trimec product with triclopyr and quinclorac is fast acting and works great.
2. Where can I find miners or MIcros for my lawn
This local ifa deal sold two miner / micro packs.
Mikropak- 0-0-0
Getgreen 10-0-0
The benefits are the mikropak has higher amounts of micros besides the sulfur. The downside is it does not have the nitrogen in it. It was also $8 cheaper than the getgreen. The nitrogen can be supplemented by any granular fertilizer and I suggest at least 4% as a supplement.
Both of these products work well. I prefer the Mikropak since the miners are higher concentrate.
1. What fertilizer should I put down now.
Given the fact it's hot and it's July we recommended a slow release fertilizer. The recommended local brand is a 25-5-10 rated at 4lbs to 6lbs per 1000ft2. Puts you at .75 to 1.125lbs of nitrogen per 1000ft2. 6.6% of the 25% is coated slow release nitrogen and is an IFA branded product.
