Follow me on my episode of What's Wrong With My Lawn; Matted Grass?!! How to repair snow mold fungus and winter die out thatch . This customer was confused on why her lawn had brown patches and areas that were dying. The struggling lawn was a combination of too much shade, the wrong grass type, and matted grass that had turned into snow mold.
Power raking isn't always the answer. If you power rake through the snow mold areas you will scalp the lawn to the point it won't be repairable. My suggestion is to use a good old fashion hand rake and lightly rake the grass upward to allow oxygen to dry the areas out. If the snow mold fungus hasn't set in too badly the grass will repair itself.
Snow mold fungus is preventable by identifying the areas of the grass as they begin to mat up. By raking through the matted grass you will allow oxygen into the area that prevents fungal growth.
