Growing grass in the shade can be difficult. I get a lot of people asking me how to grow grass in the shade. Bermuda grass in the shade does not do very well, if bermudagrass will grow in shade, it is usually very thin and there will still be bare spots in a shady lawn. Fescue and rye grass are varieties of grass that can grow in shade and barenbrug has developed what they consider to be the best type of grass seed for shade. They have appropriately named it Shade Savant. This grass seed grew very well in the shade here at my in-laws house. If you have a bare area under a tree and you want grass to grow in the shade, be sure to consider Shade Savant - link: https://www.barusa.com/turf/products/specialty-mixtures/shade-savant.htm
