This beginner's guide will show you everything you need to know to scarify your lawn from start to finish. You'll learn about the tools you need, how to identify thatch and moss, and three different ways to kill the moss in your lawn.

To get started, you'll need to cut the grass. Depending on what you're trying to achieve, you may want to scalp the grass away down or cut it very short. However, keep in mind that scalping the grass down can take longer for the grass to recover, so there's no right or wrong way to do it. The key thing is it depends on your own lawn.

The reason we scarify is that when there's too much thatch in your lawn, it starts to block air, water, and light from getting down into the roots. Thatch also gives the moss somewhere to grow
The best way to get rid of it is to scarify. This just means taking a tool and ripping thatch and moss out.

There are a couple of manual tools you can use to scarify your lawn, including a scarifier rake or a bulldog metal rake. While these work well, they are hard work and better suited for smaller spaces. For larger lawns, you may want to consider renting an electric scarifier or a professional scarifier.

When scarifying, you want the blades to tickle the surface and not go into the soil. It's better to set the scarifier to a high height and bring it down slowly, testing it out for yourself. Avoid putting holes in your lawn, and don't worry if it's your first time scarifying. Just set the scarifier to a high height, do a couple of passes, and work your way down slowly.

I will also show you how to clean up the mess created from the scarification and the best tools to do this
