As the temperature continues to drop and the days get shorter, it’s time to think about managing your lawn throughout the winter months.

In this video we will take you through a step-by-step winter lawn care checklist.

Should I Fertilise My Lawn?
A granular fertiliser application in autumn will help give your lawn a final boost before the cooler temperatures set in. However, once the temperatures have already started cooling, if you have a warm-season grass, the grass will be dormant, and fertilising will have very minimal impact.

If you want to improve the health of your lawn through the winter, you are best to use a liquid fertiliser like Exceed that has iron and manganese to strengthen the plant as it is absorbed quickly by the leaf of the grass.

How Regularly Should I Be Mowing My Grass?
As temperatures decline, your lawn slows in growth. In many areas this will mean very minimal mowing requirements throughout winter. But it is still important to run the mower over the lawn every so often to keep the height in check if there is growth and to also tidy up any build-up of debris during this time by leaving the catcher on.

Stick to the one-third rule, removing no more than a third of the leaf and ensure you don’t scalp the lawn causing any unnecessary stress to the grass while its dormant and unable to recover.

What Can I Use to Stop Lawn Weeds?
Many weeds don’t stop growing in winter, so it’s important to keep on top of them through hand weeding and treatments if necessary while your lawn is vulnerable to invasion.

The type of weed will change what products you should use to remove them, so it is best to know what kind of weed you have before looking at products.

For common broadleaf weeds like Clover, Bindii, Oxalis, Cudweed and Catsear, we recommend using a broadleaf herbicide like All Purpose Weed Control or Amgrow Bin Die. The All Purpose Weed Control comes in an easy-to-use hose-on bottle that clips onto the hose for application. Amgrow Bin Die comes in a concentrate that needs to be mixed with water and applied through a knapsack or garden sprayer.

A great way to help prevent weeds emerging in your lawn again next winter, is to apply a pre emergent herbicide before the temperatures drop in Autumn.

Pre-emergent herbicides target weed seeds before the weed grows and is visible in your lawn. They create a barrier at the soil level, affecting the germination of any new seedlings. This type of herbicide is great to use for prevention, particularly if your lawn has had seasonal weeds like Winter Grass appearing.

Should I Use Iron on My Lawn?
As mentioned previously with exceed, Iron products can also be used to help strengthen They can also help extend and improve your lawns colour both heading into and throughout the cooler months.

If you want to use a dedicated iron-based product in winter, we recommend using Iron Guard Plus.

A common thing we hear from people is that they really don’t like how their grass loses colour in winter. While this is completely normal, there is something you can do about it…

ColourGuard plus is an instant turf pigment that is absorbed into the leaf of the grass. This will keep your lawn nice and naturally green for up to 12 weeks. Check it out online at the lawn store or in store from local Lawn Solutions Members and stockists.
