I find a fairly new Ozito 18v Battery Electric Lawn Mower thrown out on the rubbish pile. I notice this little mower hasn't done very much work. This is something I'm seeing more and more across multiple brands. I investigate this Ozito 18v Lawn Mower at my local Bunnings to see one that's on display. Like many Electric Lawn Mowers the Lithium battery system is basically half the cost of the mower. This Ozito has a 5 year mower warranty but the battery only has a 3 year warranty. And going by the product reviews of this 18 volt Lawn Mower a 4.0Ah battery doesn't do very much grass cutting at all. A product review from Karen in Queensland tells us she's out mowing her lawns three times a week in Summer to just manage her lawns. Wow Karen really loves mowing!
The 18v Ozito will struggle to cut grass that's long or wet. It's only good at cutting a small amount of grass when mowing and really only suitable for very small lawns.
I also go back and look at the 36v Ryobi Electric Lawn Mower that was also thrown out within a few years of being purchased. I highly suspect what's failing is the Lithium Battery packs, some of these batteries don't like being neglected over Winter when you sometimes don't use a Lawn Mower for 3 to 4 months. If one Lithium cell starts to fail the whole battery pack will be dominated by the failing cell, m3sca1 will explain.
One big problem is the way the Electric Lawn Mower manufacturers explain the ability of a Mower. The numbers are always stretched and the cutting is done on dry short grass. As soon as a Electric Lawn Mower has to labor on longer grass or wet grass the amount of energy required is massive. This extra work expires the batteries very fast. Consumers shopping for a Electric Lawn Mower are often unable to understand how they need to totally change the way they manage their lawns, and will need to get use to being out mowing at least every week or multiple times a week. Basically you become a slave to the mower. If your going to buy a more powerful Electric Lawn Mower your going to be buying a 80 Volt system that will have very expensive batteries and a fairly big overall purchase price. The query when purchasing should be this? How long will the batteries last, how much are they to replace in a few years time. This is the joy of going green, you might be saving the planet but nothing is going to save your wallet.
Cheap consumer goods that are thrown out in very short time is destroying the planet.
