The recommended height for mowing tall fescue lawns in Maryland is 3 to 3.5 inches tall. This height helps to shade out crabgrass, preventing the weed seeds from germinating. In addition, sharpen your mower blade. A dull blade will fray the edges of the grass, providing an opportunity for disease organisms to get in. A dull blade gives a lawn an unthrifty, dull appearance. Use a sharp blade to get a clean-cut appearance. - By Geoffrey Rinehart, University of Maryland Extension
